"What's it like to be Young and Irish?"

Using a six month investigative initiative called "Being Young and Irish" the government invited young Irish people to contribute to a declaration for change in areas relating to youth policy. Over 800 young Irish people between the ages of 17- 26 years took the government up on this offer and contributed via email, posts and attendance at four workshop style seminars. The journey began in May of this year and ended on Nov. 17th with the presentation of the participants combined declaration to President Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin. President Michael D. Higgins is showing his commitment to tackling the issue of youth engagement. Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald also addressed the attendees at the final declaration event in November.

Whilst I am buzzed about this initiative, I am wondering where the decision to relegate the role of guidance in second level schools fits in? Eagerly awaiting the budget break down re. education support and career guidance allocation... Please leave your comments below if you have any thoughts...

Also, if you work in guidance yourself and would like to get involved at European level next year- this is for you! The NCGE are part organizing Academia - Exchange of Guidance Practitioners. Shivaun Gallagher of the NCGE explains involvement as follows: "Working alongside NCGE staff, volunteers would be asked to help at the registration desk, meet and greet delegates attending the meetings and be available to answer general questions about Ireland, education in Ireland, guidance in Ireland and the many smaller queries that might arise during the day eg. requests for printing, directions etc.In return, volunteers may sit in on some of the workshops and meetings taking place and we would extend an invitation to volunteers to join delegates for the social event being organised to correspond with each meeting. We intend to have a briefing meeting for all volunteers ahead of the events to answer any further queries and a chance for us all to introduce ourselves before the guests arrive. Not being a member of the IGC would have no bearing on your application."
The deadline was Nov. 30th but if you get in touch, they may still accept your application. Click here to view the proposal and find out how to apply. Email Shivaun.Gallagher@ncge.ie
